Phoenix is the capital and most populous city in Arizona. It lies in the Southwestern United States and serves as the cultural, economic, and governmental hub of the Phoenix metropolitan area—the 10th-largest metro area by population in the US. As of 2021, it had a population of 1.625 million people, making it the fifth-most populous city in the United States and the largest state capital by population.
The city lies within Maricopa County and is surrounded by desert and mountain ranges. It experiences a sunny, dry climate due to its location in the Sonoran Desert, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. On average, temperatures range between 40-100 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year.
When Jack Swilling, a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, journeyed across the Salt River Valley in 1867 while scouting around Wickenburg’s mining town, he noticed an opportunity to cultivate crops that could provide nourishment for its citizens. This occasion marked Phoenix’s inception as we know it today.
Examining the land, he noticed mounds of dirt that had been eroded away by the canals constructed long ago by its original inhabitants. Thus inspired in 1868, Swilling created the Swilling Irrigation and Canal Company. He began digging a deep canal to route river water into his new endeavor, an area now comprising eastern Phoenix near its airport. This creative venture was backed up with several crop fields planted soon after and still standing today!
Attracted by the area’s rich soil and lack of frost, more settlers soon began to make their way to Swilling’s farmhouse. One of his original comrades, Lord Darrell Duppa, suggested calling it Phoenix for its ability to rise from the ashes of a prior civilization. This name quickly took hold and became a popular destination in the valley.
